The major aim of this study was to investigate the parental factors effecting the adolescents’ academic achievement in Turkish culture. A sample of 223 high school students, in 9, 10 and 11th grades, attending three different private schools in stanbul were included in the study. “Personal Information Form”, “Authoritativeness Measure” (for mothers and fathers separetly), “Parental-Marital Satisfaction Scale” and ”Scale of Family Problems Assessment” were applied in the survey to gather data. The source of all the information was the adolescents. The results of the study indicated that, girls were more successful than boys and “success” did not differ as a function of the structure of the family (intact or not). No mediating effects of parents’ education level and employment were found for academic achievement. However interestingly ages of the mothers and the fathers were positively correlated with the adolescents’ achievement. Authoritativeness of the mother and the father predicted student’s school performance as expexcted. The results also indicated that psychological autonomy granted by both parents, was correlated with higher grades for both boys and girls in school. In addition to this maternal acceptance/involvemet also predicted the girls’ achievement but not the boys’. On the other hand, parental-marital satisfaction and family problems, as perceived by the adolescents, did not have any mediating effects, in respect to school performance. As a result, the importance of parent-child relationships, was shown once more by this study. Ultimately the findings were discussed in the context of literature and suggestions were made for related further research.
