Özet

In a dynamically changing world, people constantly update their knowledge as they receive new information, which can often lead to inconsistency within their existing belief sets. Research on belief-revision has shown that to resolve such inconsistency, individuals tend to maintain statements that define general rules of the belief set and revise beliefs that include particular observations. A different line of research focusing on attitude change and persuasion suggested that various properties of the knowledge source, including expertise and relevance, can affect the process of attitude change. The current study examined the role of expertise and relevance of the source in the process of belief-revision. Fifty-five (41 Females) university students (Mean Age = 22.08, Std. Dev: = 2.05) were randomly assigned to 3 conditions: 1) the general statements were uttered by either experts or novices with relevant backgrounds (Experimental Condition), 2) the expertise of the source uttering the general statements was irrelevant to the target belief content (Control Condition - Irrelevant Source), 3) general statements were uttered anonymously (Control Condition - No Source). There were no significant main effects of neither expertise level nor relevancy of the source on how often the general statements were revised (ps > 0.05). Moreover, in the absence of a source (Control Condition – No Source), participants revised the general statements 60% of the time. The findings of the current study were inconsistent with prior research in two ways: 1) overall, individuals were equally likely to revise general and particular statements; 2) the expertise or relevance of the knowledge source did not influence the strength of individuals’ beliefs. The differences between attitude change/persuasion and belief-revision paradigms, together with other potential factors, such as quality/quantity of evidence, influencing belief-revision were discussed as possible explanations for the study findings.
