Yayın Coexistence of atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and hamartoma of the lung(2010) Midi A.; Çubuk R.; Yener A.N.; Örki A.; Arman B.Atypical adenomatous hyperplasia is considered to be a preliminary lesion for pulmonary adenocarcinoma while lung hamartomas (mesenchymomas) are non-neoplastic, tumor-like malformations. A patient underwent transthoracic fine-needle aspiration biopsy for a pulmonary mass and then lingulectomy following a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. The surgical specimen was solid and 25 mm in diameter. Microscopic investigation revealed that the mass was a hamartoma with an atypical adenomatous hyperplasia focus at the periphery. We believe that the cells leading the cancer diagnosis had come from the atypical adenomatous hyperplasia focus around the hamartoma. We presented this case as atypical adenomatous hyperplasia contains atypical epithelium and can be diagnosed as a malignancy on fine needle aspiration biopsy and the coexistence of atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and hamartoma has not been reported previously.Yayın Differences in the cytological features of atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and low-grade prostatic adenocarcinoma(2010) Midi A.; Tecimer T.; Bozkurt S.; Özkan N.Objective: The aim of this study was to review the histological features and to define parameters distinguishing atypical adenomatous hyperplasia from prostatic adenocarcinoma grade 1 and 2. We evaluated 14 parameters related with cytological properties. Material and Method: We found 11 atypical adenomatous hyperplasia (22 foci) and 15 prostatic adenocarcinoma grade 1 and 2 (22 foci) lesions in 105 radical prostatectomy specimens. Basal cell-specific keratin (34ßE12) was applied and based on the fact that prostatic adenocarcinoma grade 1 and 2 lesions do not have basal cells we grouped the lesions as atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and prostatic adenocarcinoma grade 1 and 2. Results: Statistically significant differences were found between atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and prostatic adenocarcinoma grade 1 and 2 lesions for some parameters including the largest nuclear diameter, nuclear location, 1-2 µm nucleolus, > 2 µm nucleolus, and nuclei containing multiple nucleoli. We found similar properties between the two lesions for the following parameters: irregularity of nuclear membrane, median diameter of the nucleolus, chromatin pattern, pynotic nucleus, nuclear pleomorphism, < 1 µm nucleolus, nucleolar margination, and the ratio of nucleus to cytoplasm and the appearance of cytoplasm in the secretory cells. Conclusion: Evaluation of the overall histomorphological criteria is important in the differentiation of atypical adenomatous hyperplasia and prostatic adenocarcinoma grade 1 and 2 lesions.Yayın Effects of spirulina on cyclophosphamide-induced ovarian toxicity in rats: Biochemical and histomorphometric evaluation of the ovary(2013) Yener N.A.; Sinanoglu O.; Ilter E.; Celik A.; Sezgin G.; Midi A.; Deveci, Uğur; Aksungar F.; Deveci, UğurCyclophosphamide (Cyc) is known to cause ovotoxicity and infertility in women. Our aim is to investigate the possible ovotoxic effects of Cyc and possible antioxidant and protective effects of blue-green algae, Spirulina (Sp), in rat ovaries. Eighteen rats were given: group I (n = 6, control); group II (n = 6, CP), a single dose Cyc; group III (n = 6, Sp+Cyc), 7 days Sp+single dose Cyc. Tissue malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities are assessed biochemically. Normal and atretic primordial and primary follicle counts for all sections obtained for each ovary are calculated. Mean number of follicle counts for each group are compared. In Sp+Cyc group, tissue MDA levels were significantly lower than those in the CP and higher than those in the C group (CP > Sp + Cyc > C). Tissue SOD activity was significantly higher in Sp+Cyc group than that in the CP group and lower than that in the C group (C > Sp + Cyc > C). No statistically significant difference was found between the ovarian CAT activities in any group. Histomorphometrically, there was also no significant difference between the mean numbers of normal and atretic small follicle counts. Our results suggest that single dose Cyc has adverse effects on oxidant status of the ovaries and Sp has protective effects in Cyc-induced ovotoxicity. © 2013 Nese Arzu Yener et al.Yayın Investigation of the effect of radiotherapy on the proliferative index (Ki-67) in recurring diffuse glial tumors [Nüks gösteren diffüz glial tümörlerde radyoterapinin proliferatif i·ndeks (Ki-67) üzerine etkisinin araşti{dotless}ri{dotless}lmasi{dotless}](2011) Midi A.; Belirgen M.; Çag¨lar H.; Sav A.Introduction: Radiotherapy (RT) has various effects such as apoptosis stimulation, mitosis inhibition, mutagenic effect, chromosomal aberration and neoplastic transformation. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of RT administered to diffuse glial tumors on the proliferation activity and mitotic activity of the tumor. Material-Method: An overall of 49 re-operated recurrent cases (16 cases had received postoperative RT while 33 cases did not receive RT) diagnosed as glial tumor were included in this study. The tumor cohort consisted of diffuse astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma and oligoastrocytomas. Ki-67 proliferating index, mitoses and grades of the primary and recurrent tumors were compared. Result: We found that the grades of recurrent tumors were lower than the grade during the first surgery in cases that had RT compared to those that had not. Similarly, Ki-67 was lower in cases that had received RT. We also noted suppressed mitotic activity in cases that had received RT.Yayın Mesenteric meckel's diverticulum : A case report(ARSMB-KVBMG, 2009) Manukyan, Manuk Norayık; Kebudi A.; Midi A.Meckel's diverticulum, an omphalomesenteric remnant caused by the failure of the vitelline duct to involute by the seventh or eight week of gestation, was first described in 1809 by Johann Friederick Meckel. It is the most common congenital abnormality of the small intestine. It is usually located in the last 90 cm of the terminal ileum and is formed by all layers of the small intestine. It frequently contains heterotopic tissue, usually gastric mucosa. Here we report a 15-year-old white female who presented to the emergency ward with abdominal pain. Laparotomy was performed with the diagnosis of acute abdomen. A Meckel's diverticulum was found in the mesenteric aspect of the ileum. Histologic examination of the specimen revealed the presence of pancreatic tissue and oxyntic and antral type gastric mucosa showing chronic peptic ulceration apart from intestinal mucosa. This case report underlines the need for a revision in our understanding and classification of Meckel's diverticulum.Yayın Neuroprotective effect of ziprasidone: Preliminary results compared to haloperidol(Ondokuz Mayis Universitesi, 2014) Çinar N.; Karao?lan A.; Midi A.; Çal M.A.; Kelten B.; Çakmak M.A.; Şahin S.Typical and atypical antipsychotic drugs are widely used to treat psychosis. The present study investigated whether ziprasidone, an atypical antipsychotic drug, has a neuroprotective effect on hippocampal neurons in rats with experimentallyinduced transient cerebral ischemia comparatively with haloperidol which is a typical antipsychotic. Transient cerebral ischemia was induced by 10-minute occlusion of bilateral carotis communis arteries. The rats were divided into four groups: Shamoperated control group (Group I), ischemia control group (Group II), haloperidol-treated group (Group III) and ziprasidone-treated group (Group IV). Following 10-minute ischemia, Group III received 1mg/kg haloperidol intramuscularly and Group IV received 2.5 mg/kg ziprasidone intraperitoneally. The animals were sacrificed on the seventh day following induced ischemia to determine the number of intact neurons at hippocampus and dentate gyrus to demonstrate the effects of ischemia and efficacy of the treatments administered. Surviving cell numbers were found in the sham operated group; 198, in the ischemia control group; 80, in the haloperidol-treated group; 185, in ziprasidonetreated group; 189. The groups showed significant difference in the comparison of the surviving cell numbers. However, the number of surviving cells did not significantly different between the ziprasidone and haloperidol-treated group. Previous studies with the ischemia model have demonstrated protective effects of haloperidol on hippocampal region. The findings of the present study show that ziprasidone, which is an atypical antipsychotic drug, may produce neuroprotective effects as potent as haloperidol, which is a typical antipsychotic drug. © 2014 OMU.Yayın "Russell body" gastritis: A case report(2010) Midi A.; Ataizi Çelikel Ç.; Kaya H.Our case was a 50-year-old female who presented at the outpatients department with dyspeptic symptoms. Microscopical examination of mucosal samples from the corpus and antrum showed widespread Helicobacter pylori within the superficial mucus network, marked neutrophilic cryptitis, widespread reactive/regenerative crypt hyperplasia, intestinal metaplasia, and increased lymphoplasmocytoid cells and plasma cells full of immunoglobulin in the lamina propria. Immunohistochemical staining showed the plasma cells to be CD3 (-), CD20 (-), CD79a (+), CD45 (+), Kappa (+), and Lambda (+). It is possible for a dense accumulation of Russell bodies to be observed on a background of H. pylori taking into account that Russell bodies contain immunoglobulin aggregates and side products of immunoglobulin synthesis. However, there are only a limited number of articles evaluating this aspect. We present a case to contribute to the few articles on Helicobacter gastritis characterized by an inflammatory reaction rich in "Russell" bodies.Yayın Toxic anterior segment syndrome: Clinical and histopathological findings [Toksik anterior segment sendromu: Klinik ve histopatolojik bulgular](2011) Tunç Z.; Arslan O.Ş.; Akingöl Z.; Ünal M.; Midi A.; Şencan S.Purpose: To analyze the clinical and histopathological findings of toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) which can be developed after phacoemulsification surgery. Material and Method: We evaluated the cases of three patients who developed TASS after uneventful phacoemulsification operations performed by the same surgeon in the same session. All patients were examined at the 1st, 12th, 24th, and 48th hours postoperatively. Further follow-up visits were planned as needed. Corneal decompensation developed in all three cases. One patient underwent evisceration and another one - penetrating keratoplasty. Both corneas were analyzed histopathologically. Results: The patients were between 61 and 73 years of age and all were male. Blurred vision without pain, limbus-tolimbus corneal edema and hypopyon were observed in all three cases. In each case, the iris was irregularly dilated and atrophic. Histopathological evaluation showed that the endothelial cell layer has disappeared completely in two corneas. The third case suffered loss of vision due to corneal decompensation and glaucoma refractory to medical treatment. Discussion: TASS is a serious complication, which can result in complete loss of corneal endothelial layer. It is important that switching to disposable instruments and/or adequate cleaning of the surgical instruments will reduce the TASS complication.
