    Homocysteine and Behçet disease

    Three of the five patients with seriously complicated Behçet disease had uveitis and two had high homocysteine levels. Gastrointestinal and central nervous system involvement were the other two serious complications. The highest level of plasma homocysteine level (50 mmol/L) in this study belonged to a patient with Behçet disease, Budd-Chiari Syndrome, and factor V Leiden mutation. There is growing evidence that hyperhomocystinemia is an independent risk factor for premature arteriosclerotic disease, including cerebral, peripheral, and coronary vascular diseases (2,6). Therefore, vascular events in autoimmune disease have also been investigated. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is the first autoimmune disease that was investigated. Raised homocysteine concentrations were found in 51 (15%) SLE patients. After adjustment for established risk factors, total plasma homocysteine concentrations remained an independent risk factor for stroke [2.44], and arterial thromboses [3.49] (7).
